HARRIS SHINES AS MIDDLESEX WIN IN BALCOMBE
Middlesex are through to the Regional Finals of the Balcombe Trophy after an impressive victory away to Buckinghamshire BA in the 1st rd.
The match was played at the excellent Gerrards Cross BC under clear blue skies in gloriously warm weather. Those spectators gathered were treated to high class bowls from both sides in a great battle that ebbed and flowed until about half way when Middlesex edged ahead to eventually win by 8, 36-44.
The score cards are reproduced below and show the pattern of the game and how the 2 rinks differed. The rink containing Kevin Ward (Broomfield), Chris Dunkley (Poplar), Steve Stockley (Parsons Green) and Perry Cook (Poplar) scored in bulk with a 5 and 2 x 3’s in their 1st 10 ends as they built up a 5 shot lead. Their experienced opposition fought back in the 2nd half of the game but as they chased shots Perry’s men were able to pick up a further 2 x 3’s to record a 2 shot win.
Over on the other rink Glen Adams (Hendon), Barry Wheeler (West Ealing), Chris Harris and Tony Waller (Ladygate) had a tighter and more conservative game. At 10 ends they were 4 behind but a run of 8 winning ends in the 2nd half of the game saw them pull away to win by 6. Particularly impressive was Chris Harris who was making his debut at this level but produced a great display of consistent drawing that reduced his opposition to attacking shots.
So an impressive mornings work with Team Manager Ray Fortune a happy man.
In the days other games Isle of Wight beat Hampshire, Surrey beat Kent and Berkshire beat Sussex.
In the draw for the regional finals Middlesex have been paired with Surrey BA. This game will take place at 1000hrs on June 25th at Bromley BC, Kent. The winners will play either Berkshire or the Isle of Wight in the final that afternoon.
The players would like to thank all those who travelled to Gerrards Cross to support the side and hope to see as many supporters as possible at Bromley.
