Last week some of the members of the Middlesex Friendly Squad experienced the unpleasant side effects of wind! Well the blustery weather was the reason they gave for their defeat at Wanstead Central in the annual friendly against Essex BA.

True it was a very windy afternoon which did not help control of woods on the green but it could have been worse as persistent rain all that morning had made it look like play would be curtailed or abandoned altogether.

Thank fully the rain stopped long enough for the game to proceed although Middlesex slipped to a 98-118 defeat winning on only 2 rinks with a 3rd drawn.

Top rink were the local boys, specifically drafted in for their insider knowledge and their proximity to Wanstead! So well done to Poplar’s J Matthews, John Hanson, Tony Ward and T Daden who won 21-11. Middlesex’s other winning rink, streaking home by 1, 16-15 were Ron Searle (Ashford), Gordon Anderson (Bury Lodge), Steve Gibson (Bishops Duppas) and Antonio Bracaliello (Broomfield).

Meritous mention also to Colin Haley (Victora Park)who arrived for the game but was not on the Middlesex list, so with Essex a player short he kindly agreed to play for the opposition. Not so kindly however he helped his 3 new team mates to be the Essex top rink!

Next up for the friendly squad should have been a game against Berkshire BA at Broomfield but sadly the Royal County were unable to field a side and the game was cancelled. Therefore the next game is against Sussex BA at Burgess Hill BC on Wednesday 22nd June. Last season this was also a fixture affected by the weather when it was abandoned half way due to persistent rain with Sussex comfortably ahead. Away from home however, Middlesex have won 3 of the last 5 games played in the South Coast County, will we prevail again?
